  • Sam Kim’s New Alluring Metaverse Music Video: ‘Smile’ (2022)

Sam Kim’s New Alluring Metaverse Music Video: ‘Smile’ (2022)

Sam Kim’sSmile’ was used by the record label Unbound Entertainment Group and Records to create a music video in a metaverse environment. The race towards the metaverse never ends and there are already several platforms that want to position themselves as the leader of the music industry through immersive musical experiences.

A metaverse is a virtual world for which Facebook or Google, Nvidia, and Microsoft are deciding to bet to such an extent that Facebook has changed the name of their company to Meta. It is not any kind of new concept. We have already seen it in the cinematographic world, with movies like ‘Ready Player One‘, tv shows like ‘Black Mirror’.

    Who is Sam Kim?

    Sam Kim Profile

Kim Gun-ji (Sam Kim) is a Korean-American singer. He participated in the SBS audition program K-Pop Star Season 3 (2013) and finished runner-up. In that show, he was known for his very young age (15 at the time), his soulful guitar genius, and was characterized by his groovy guitar playing skills.

After a two-year hiatus, in 2016, he released two projects: the first part of his EP My Name is Sam and the full-length I Am Sam. On the lead single ‘No Sense’, Crush was featured.

    [embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hK8mMncDXOc[/embedyt]

In November 2018, after another two-year break, Sam Kim released his full-length studio album Sun and Moon. In the album, Sam showed his versatility in various genres such as R&B, jazz, hip-hop, acoustic, and pop ballad.

In June 2021, he came back with ‘The Juice’. It is a retro funk pop/hip-hop song with autobiographical content that expresses the energy, the various burdens that Sam Kim feels. It is an impressive song with kitsch lyrics that stand out.

    [embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oO3GUUzGuK8[/embedyt]

Since the release of his first project, Sam Kim has been actively engaging in various music programs, collaborations, and expanding his musical capabilities by participating in composing, writing lyrics, and featuring various musicians including IU.

    Sam Kim’s Metaverse Video

On, January 28, 2022, Sam Kim’s ‘Smile’ music video was released. It portrays a metaverse reality.

    [embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tkLGCRKjPY[/embedyt]

Sam Kim – Smile (Message about Addiction)

    digital life

‘Smile’ is low-key questioning digital health and mental stability. Sam sings: ‘you won’t be here till tomorrow, till then, don’t be sad’. A virtual world that makes us feel that we are living a parallel reality is by definition highly addictive. This addiction is probably greater than that produced by video games. An ideal reality, which makes the brain believe that it is experiencing real and satisfactory situations, makes the brain secrete hormones such as dopamine. Therefore, our brain will always want more.

Sam Kim – Smile (Message about Social Relationships)

    metaverse vr

The visuals are colorful, joyous but the lyrics are quite important, philosophical. What is real and what is fantasy? The characters in the video are dancing. However, the words suggest isolation. A virtual universe may make us feel more isolated than ever, lose empathy and deteriorate, in general, socio-emotional skills. Last line of the song: ‘I love the way you f***ing smile’. For some, there is no problem with this line. Nevertheless, in this context, the use of the expletive is telling. Without real people to hug, touch, look into the eyes of, behaviors may change dramatically.

Looking for something closer and more human, the metaverse will allow us to interact with people who are physically far away in a more realistic way, to look at our body and our gestures reproduced by the sensors of the virtual reality helmet. We will be able to talk to each other, we will be able to walk through virtual worlds, and it will not matter where we connect from. We will even be able to express ourselves as we would like to be, and not how we physically are.

The metaverse will change our lives, for sure. Maybe the key to its success, the panacea to all of its potential problems is to just smile.

  • The 15 Best Korean Music Videos of 2021

The 15 Best Korean Music Videos of 2021

After talking about the Best Rookies, Best Solo Artists, and Best-Selling Korean Albums of 2021, here we are now to talk about this year’s best music videos.

Music videos are one of the best ways to create or develop the visual identity of a singer or a group. Their importance should not be taken too lightly, as they play a very important role in an artist’s promotion and image. More noticeable than a soundtrack, music videos offer significant reach to an increasingly large audience. A video must amalgamate creativity and technical prowess in order for it to stand out.

In addition, nowadays, a great deal of money is invested in music videos. Why? Because a music video will have more impact than the release of an album.

So, here are some of this year’s best music videos based on the combination of the public’s reception, the aesthetics, and the number of views (to a lesser extent).

There is no order in this list, at all.

    IU(아이유) _ strawberry moon

Set in a fantasy world, IU is living the perfect love story. It is easy to grasp her emotions when you watch this video as she wears her heart on her sleeve. This is a great cradle song.

    [embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqgxcCjD04s[/embedyt]

    aespa 에스파 ‘Savage’

It seems like they have already been on the metaverse. In this video, they are dancing with their metaverse avatars. The visuals are set against a backdrop of a futuristic world. ‘Savage’ was only their third video but they hit hard.

    [embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPdWvnAAurg[/embedyt]

    JEON SOMI (전소미) – ‘XOXO’

In the video, JEON SOMI’s boyfriend cheated on her. Because of that, she is showing how great of a badass she is. Causing a mess, breaking, destroying things, and even blowing up her boyfriend’s car. SOMI is unstoppable. The cutest part is her dad’s cameo in the music video.

    [embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8kqPkEXP_E[/embedyt]

Jessi – Cold Blooded (with SWF)

Through this video, Jessi made a lot of people know about the show Street Woman Fighter. She featured all dance crews and only appeared in the last 50 seconds. The dancers gleamed with astounding skills.

    [embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1JHOl9CSmXk[/embedyt]

    aespa 에스파 ‘Next Level’

In just a little over a year since their debut, aespa has received a few honorable nominations i.e. Daesangs. It is not surprising they won the Best Dance Performance Female Group, at the 2021 MAMA.

    [embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TWR90KJl84[/embedyt]

LIM YOUNG WOONG – ‘My Starry Love ‘

This is one of the songs/videos Korean people have enjoyed the most in 2021. It is emotional and not mainstream. Therefore, the elders loved it as it reminded them of their youth. This song/video allowed people to rekindle memories and emotions associated with a particular event.

    [embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fqrnAxfVfU[/embedyt]

    BTS – ‘Butter’

Of course, they have to be here. ‘Smooth like butter’. Yes, throughout the whole video, they displayed smooth dance moves, smooth decors, smooth transitions. The colors can do nothing but ‘melt your heart’.

    [embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMweEpGlu_U[/embedyt]

LISA – ‘MONEY’ EXCLUSIVE PERFORMANCE VIDEO

Here, LISA is showing off her versatility. She is rapping, dancing, and singing. The dance moves captivate the audience and her confidence can be felt through the cameras. The visuals draw you in. And the first seconds, in the background, we can read ‘money is a terrible master but an excellent servant’. What does it mean?

    [embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNCWe_6HAM8[/embedyt]

    NCT U _ Maniac

The video is very original as it focuses on one dancer who, from the start to the end, is fighting against herself. This duality, this yin and yang shows how complementarity is crucial. Because, at the end of the video, the two opposing forces were dancing together.

    [embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ffD9Desjcg[/embedyt]

    LISA – ‘LALISA’

You can say whatever you want about LISA but she is super confident. In the first seconds, she made it clear: “You know just from looking at my back…I shake up the world”. The video is a display of LISA’s delicacy and boastfulness. A lot of sets and outfits. “From Thailand to Korea, and here, went for the throat”. How to express it better than sitting on a golden throne?

    [embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awkkyBH2zEo[/embedyt]

    ITZY “LOCO”

The song is energetic. And as for the visuals, their outfits were flashy and the refulgent colors just set the mood. Besides those points, it was also exciting to see them put on a whole show.

    [embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MjCZfZfucEc[/embedyt]

    Dreamcatcher ‘Odd Eye’

Dance performance-wise, they definitely are at the top. The choreography is pleasing to watch. As the title indicates, for a better video experience, focus on their eyes, their facial expressions and notice how telling they are.

    [embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1QD0FeZyDtQ[/embedyt]

    IVE – ELEVEN

They made their debut in early December and ‘ELEVEN’ became the best-selling debut album by a K-Pop girl group, the same-title video is the most-viewed 2021 debut MV.

The choppiness of the beat on the video makes it catchy. The slowdowns play with the listener’s sensations. They confess their love to a person and they just feel untroubled.

They have garnered a lot of attention since their album release. We can’t wait for their comeback in 2022.

    [embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=–FmExEAsM8[/embedyt]

    BAEKHYUN ‘Bambi’

Baekhyun is the first to be awarded best male artist 3 times in a row at the MAMA. With this heartfelt song, he delivered a great performance both musically and visually. The inspiration from Michael Jackson is conspicuous. With this R&B song, his melodic voice, and the visuals, Baekhyun is reminding people what they are going to miss out on if they do not hop on the train.

    [embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8M3WUaeIbOk[/embedyt]

    EVERGLOW – FIRST

The sextet debuted in 2019 and has been living up to the hype. On “FIRST”, they are showing people that they are ready to fight, ready to do whatever it takes. And for that, they are in their battle uniform. They executed a very intense choreography with breathtaking transitions. The music itself motivates and makes you want to strive for more.

Best Korean Solo Artists of 2021

2021 was an amazing year in terms of the number of albums, songs, and OST’s we have received. Of course, Korean groups get a lot of attention, but we wanted to shine a nice light on the solo artists as well, as they are absolutely amazing. So here are a few of the best Korean solo artists who we thought could be on this list. There is no order in this list, so we’re not saying one is better than the other.

Everyone knows IU. She is one of the solo artists who was always a solo artist, and some people may not know her songs, but they do know her. Every single year she is growing with her album sales and her socials and that also happened this year. With her album ‘Lilac’ she got her highest personal record for first-week sales. For just the first week of Lilac being released, she sold over 280.000 copies! On Spotify alone, she has over 5.5 million listeners per month. With the growth that she made and with everyone knowing her name, she definitely deserves to be on this list of best Korean solo artists.

Taemin is of course also part of this list of best Korean solo artists. Everyone knows his songs and his dances. In May, just before he went to the army, he released an album named ‘Advice’. The album didn’t get a lot of promotion and of course after Taemin himself was in the army. Regardless of not a lot of promotion, Taemin still was able to sell over 64.000 copies on just its first day, which is of course amazing. On Spotify as well, he has over 1.5 million listeners per month, even though he is in the army.

Lisa was a whole hit in September and October with her album ‘Lisa’. Especially the songs ‘Lalisa’ and ‘Money’ became a hit. ‘Lalisa’ became a big hit on its own, while ‘Money’ became the TikTok sound for Squid Game videos, which was of course very unexpected that this would happen. In total, she sold over 950.000 albums, with pre-orders included. Not only did she sell a lot, but she also has an insane amount of listeners. On just Spotify alone she has over 25 million listeners per month. Which is fantastic for a first-time solo artist and therefore she also definitely deserves to be on this list of best Korean solo artists.

Taeyeon also got nominated for a Mnet Asian Music Award, for the section Best Dance Performance – Solo. And just for that, she should be on this list of best Korean solo artists.
