Makeup looks from K-dramas are doubtlessly beautiful—from the natural beauty, chic and casual, and glamorous and stunning looks. Here are three types of makeup looks from K-dramas you’ll want to try!
The 3 Types of Makeup Looks from K-Dramas
In the realm of K-dramas, female leads always seem to have perfect appearances: well put-together outfits, accessories, and flawless makeup. Of course, there are a variety of makeup looks from K-dramas. Three of the main types include natural beauty, chic and casual, and the glamorous and stunning looks.
Natural Beauty
Watch this video from Sia Ree above to achieve a basic “natural beauty” makeup look!
When it comes to the natural beauty look, this makeup look from K-dramas is more muted and less dramatic. In other words, this look is more known as the “no makeup” makeup look! This makeup look from K-dramas focuses on highlighting facial features without altering its natural appearance. Instead, it enhances one’s naturally beautiful facial features! This natural beauty look can be worn anywhere at any time, too. It’s the perfect go-to makeup look, whether you’re running errands, or a student on campus!
My Roommate is a Gumiho (2021): Lee Dam
Makeup looks from K-dramas may seem over the top sometimes. However, the main lead of My Roommate is a Gumiho (2021), Lee Dam (Lee Hyeri), is a university student. It’s rare to find time for makeup when you’re rushing in the morning as a student! So, because she’s a student, her makeup look in this K-drama is quite minimal, yet it emphasizes her natural beauty.
This “natural beauty” makeup look certainly suits Lee Dam, since she displays a “my lips but better” lip tint. She also lightly fills in her eyebrows and wears minimally winged eyeliner, which accentuates her eyes. To achieve this look, you’ll want foundation or pressed powder for an evened out skin tone. A brow pencil from Olive Young will also give you that lightly filled-in eyebrow look that Lee Dam wears. For lips, a nice “my lips but better” lip tint from YesStyle is a great way to enhance your lips and its natural color. Finally, you can finish off your “natural beauty” look like Lee Dam with a tiny wing using a liquid eyeliner from Olive Young.
Start-Up (2020): Seo Dalmi
The “natural beauty” makeup look in this K-drama is also similar to Lee Dam’s in My Roommate is a Gumiho (2021). In the 2020 K-drama, Start-Up (2020), Bae Suzy stars as Seo Dalmi, where she’s determined to become a CEO of her own start up. She isn’t a student, but the pressure of having to achieve her dream of becoming a CEO means endless nights doing research! However, she exhibits the “natural beauty” makeup look with only a few products.
One of Seo Dalmi’s favorites is the Lancome L’Absolu Rouge Intimatte lipstick in the shade “Not Flirting,” which you can find here. But any kind of red or pink lipstick or lip tint will do! You can achieve a similar makeup look using this lip tint from YesStyle. To keep things natural of course, she lightly fills in her eyebrows with a pencil—one you can find from Olive Young here. To finish off the look, add a tiny wing with a liquid pen eyeliner from Olive Young here.
Chic and Casual
Similarly to the “natural beauty” makeup look from K-dramas, the “chic and casual” look also highlights one’s naturally beautiful facial features. The difference is that this makeup adds a bit more than the “natural beauty,” through the use of different shades of colors. This could be through the use of different eyeshadows, or even lip colors. The “chic and casual” makeup look can be worn as everyday makeup, whether that’s for school, or a day in the office.
True Beauty (2020-21): Im Jukyung
As we’ve seen so far, makeup looks from K-dramas can be very minimal, yet beautiful. In the 2020-21 K-drama, True Beauty, Im Jukyung learns the skill of makeup while learning how to refine her inner beauty. Although Im Jukyung is a high school student, she still wakes up extra early every morning to do her makeup. Since she is known as her high school’s goddess, achieving the “chic and casual” makeup look is the right way to go!
To achieve Im Jukyung’s makeup look, you’ll need a few basic products. First, you’ll want a layer of foundation or a pressed powder for an evened out skin tone. Then, lightly fill in your eyebrows using a pencil, which you can find from Olive Young here. For a casual, yet charming look, Im Jukyung adds a bit of eyeshadow to her overall look.
The K-drama features eyeshadow palettes from Colorgram, which can be found here on Olive Young! These eyeshadow palettes include a variety of nude shades and a hint of sparkle, which is a great way to achieve the “chic and casual” makeup look from True Beauty. And of course, one of the best ways to top off the look is by adding some lip tint from Olive Young. Im Jukyung already uses eyeshadow, so she doesn’t include any eyeliner for a more casual, everyday makeup look.
Watch the video below from HYOJIN to see how she transforms into Im Jukyung from True Beauty.
What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim? (2018): Kim Miso
The “casual and chic” makeup look from K-dramas is definitely one of my favorites—especially Kim Miso’s gorgeous makeup look! In What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim? (2018), Park Min Young stars as the responsible and dependable secretary, Kim Miso. An office like her must always be presentable, especially as a secretary for the Vice Chairman of the company!
With her “chic and casual” makeup look, Kim Miso always looks stunning. From her tinted and glossy lips to her soft eyeshadow and eyeliner, she really knows how to achieve this makeup look! So, let’s see how you can achieve Kim Miso’s amazing “chic and casual” look, too.
Start off with a layer of foundation or some pressed powder. Just like Kim Miso, fill in your eyebrows using a brow pencil, which you can find from YesStyle here. To emphasize your eyes more, you can also use a neutral colored palette like this one from YesStyle!
And for a tiny flare, include a tiny wing at the ends of your eyes for kind and welcoming eyes. You can find a liquid eyeliner for the same effect as Kim Miso here on Olive Young. Finally to complete the look, add on some glossy lip tint for a fuller-lip look, which you can also find here on YesStyle.
Watch the video below from KIMDAX to see how she achieves Kim Miso’s secretary makeup look!
Glamorous and Stunning
The “glamorous and stunning” makeup look is much different than the other two makeup looks we’ve discovered. Instead, this one is all about being dramatic, colorful, and sparkly, which is why it’s one of my favorite makeup looks from K-dramas. It not only emphasizes your natural facial features, but it can also make you appear more charming or even intimidating.
This look is not necessarily an everyday look (unless you want it to be!), since this makeup look is considered “glamorous and stunning.” So, it would best suit a more formal event, such as a dinner date, or a night out with some friends!
It’s Okay to Not Be Okay (2020): Ko Moon Young
For dramatic characters, makeup looks from K-dramas are always quite inspiring. In It’s Okay to Not Be Okay, Seo Yea Ji portrays the aloof children’s book author, Ko Moon Young. She’s known for her extravagant outfits; however, her makeup style is not as extravagant as her outfits are. Ko Moon Young tends to use shimmery eyeshadow and winged eyeliner with a matte lipstick to complete the look. Here’s how to achieve her impeccable makeup look from It’s Okay to Not Be Okay.
As usual, a light layer of foundation or pressed powder is a great way to start off this look. Then, lightly fill in your eyebrows, using an eyebrow pencil like this one from Olive Young. And for the fun part, you can play around with some neutral shades of eyeshadow, which you can also find here from Olive Young. Like Ko Moon Young, using some of the darker browns on the outer edges of your eye will create more depth and dimension! She also uses a bit of the sparkly shadow on her bottom lashline, right next to the tearduct.
Ko Moon Young is known to be more on the edgy side, and her eyeliner definitely emphasizes that! Using a liquid eyeliner, create a more dramatic wing to accentuate your eyes. You can find a liquid pen eyeliner from Olive Young here. Adding on these eyelashes from YesStyle will finish off the dramatic eye makeup that will create that “glamorous and stunning” look!
But, we’re not done just yet! This makeup look isn’t complete without a nice, matte lipstick. Throughout the show, Ko Moon Young displays a variety of lipstick shades, so choose one of your liking. You can find an arrangement of these matte lipsticks here from YesStyle and Olive Young.

Hotel Del Luna (2019): Jang Man Wol
One of the reasons why I love this “glamorous and stunning” makeup look from K-dramas is because of its versatility! IU (aka Lee Ji Eun) stars as the moody hotel owner, Jang Man Wol in Hotel Del Luna (2019). Jang Man Wol tends to wear extravagant dresses and outfits, just like Ko Moon Young in It’s Okay to Not Be Okay. Jang Man Wol’s “glamorous and stunning” makeup look usually includes neutral colored eyeshadows, tiny winged eyeliner to emphasize her round eyes, and a distinct lip color. Let’s see how you can recreate Jang Man Wol’s amazing makeup look.
First, start off with a light layer of foundation or pressed powder, which is used to even out your skin tone. Begin filling in your eyebrows with a brow pencil, such as this one from Olive Young. A neutral eyeshadow palette like this one from Olive Young is a great way to incorporate some depth and dimension into your look.
Add in some of the darker brown to the outer edges of your eyelid and on the bottom edges of your lashline. This will help create a more smoky look that will create some edginess! Then, add a wing using eyeliner, which you can find from Olive Young. For lip colors, Jang Man Wol sticks to glossy red and pink lip tints. So, to top it all off, choose a glossy lip color of your choice, which you can also find here from YesStyle and Olive Young.

The 3 Types of Makeup Looks from K-Dramas
So, which of the three types of makeup looks from K-dramas were you favorite? Was it the minimal “natural beauty” look? Or possibly the sparkly and colorful “glamorous and stunning” makeup look? Of course, watching K-dramas are always fun, as you follow along with the twists and turns of the story. However, it’s also fun to see all of the makeup looks from K-dramas and experimenting with different styles that will suit you! A trip to one of many Korean saunas is a perfect cure for built-up stress. The Korean sauna is one example of spas that help the mind as well as the body. A jjimjilbang is a staple in Korean culture following its emphasis on skincare and self-care. Therefore making it one of the most popular self-care options in South Korea.
What are jjimjilbangs?
Saunas are international. There are onsens in Japan, banyas in Russia, or hammams in Turkey. The relaxing sauna rooms have been a global craze for generations as people love spending time in spas.
These Korean saunas are 24-hour, gender-segregated bathhouses. The Korean word for the sauna, jjimjilbang (찜질방), comes from the root jjimjil (찜질) which means “a heated bath.” The admission price varies between W6,000 and W14,000. This depends on the location and time of day.
These jjimjilbang’s have their own “sauna culture” surrounding them. Each Korean sauna trip contains a trip to the locker room, public shower, hot tub, and scrubbing area. Many also feature massage areas and the most popular area, the steam rooms. Each area is gender-specific and separate for women and men. There is a common area, though, for both genders to meet. The common room is a place to relax, sleep, or eat. You can also detox in a dry sauna if you want to escape the sweat-inducing steam rooms.
Here are some tips on how to start your spa day. When you are ready to soak in the curative hot tubs, you will prepare yourself in the locker room. This is where you will strip and shower before entering the water. This is to keep the spa as sanitary as possible. To maximize your time in the bath, you are welcome to bring skincare products of your personal choice, but some saunas provide their own products.
What are the benefits of Korean saunas?
Most users of Korean saunas use them for weekly visitations. Clients claim that these visits are mostly for deep cleansing and muscle pain treatments. This is for a healthier body after stressful weeks at work. Trips to the sauna can also improve your heart and mind.
However, the most beneficial result of trips to a jjimjilbang is skin-centric. Some Korean saunas have specialized rooms made of salt rocks. As natural preservatives, salt rocks help the skin become porous. This better rejuvenates the skin barrier. Pine salt is another option that focuses on anti-aging. It does so by purifying the skin.
Release of Toxins
Your daily life is full of toxins. Air pollution, chemicals in skincare and makeup, as well as food. All this on top of the natural pollutants that build throughout the day. This grim clogs pores, cause breakouts and damages the skin barrier.
Extended time in the steam room allows for the body to release toxins through sweating naturally. According to lead experts in skincare and health, “sweating mobilizes toxins” to better remove them from the skin.
If you find yourself uncomfortable with extended time in the steam room, dry saunas can be just as effective. These rooms often supply visitors with natural minerals that have purifying abilities. Conventional dry sauna treatments include clay masks to draw excess sebum from the skin or cold treatments for improved circulation.
Exfoliation and Body Scrubs
To begin a body scrub, one must prepare the body. First is a trip to the steam rooms. As stated before, steam affects your pores, allowing them to open clogs and free daily dirt. Then, the hot tubs. The hot water on your skin softens the external barrier, enabling the exfoliation to clean your body better. From here, you can exfoliate your skin with a mitt or purchase a private session. This session is quite cheap in comparison to most spa prices globally (20,000 – 30,000W). In the session, you will be treated by a professional to clear the debris from your skin.
Bring-Your-Own-Skincare for Korean Saunas.
If you are not planning on spending extra money with private sessions, the best way to maximize your visit is by bringing some skincare essentials. Products that would be on the “must-have” list include sheet masks to hydrate and nourish the skin. Also, facial scrubs or nose strips. These further eradicate blackheads. Finally, mists to cool the skin and get rid of sensitivity.

Korean Beauty Trends in 2021: Slugging
Social media calls “slugging” as one of the Korean beauty trends in 2021. So it means, it is worth giving a try.
Slugging is a skincare trend from K-Beauty that involves applying a layer of oil or Vaseline to your face. It hydrates and moisturizes the skin.
K-Beauty is the birthplace and development of beauty trends in favor of flawless skin. Therefore, it’s not surprising that K-Beauty again creates a new fever with Vaseline in 2021. Above all, it is to “transform” the dry and curled skin peeling due to the cold weather into soft and stretchy.
Vaseline creates a “waterproof” feature that prevents the drainage of water through the epidermis. As a result, making your skin plump. You can apply a thin layer over certain areas on your skin to avoid blurring and unnecessary acne. In addition, you can also learn from Korean women how to use Vaseline as an effective highlighting product. The shine effect of Vaseline is more natural unlike powdered products. It makes your skin healthier and smoother. Therefore, it makes its mark in Korean beauty trends in 2021.

TOUN 28 is taking over the year! Over the last few years, Korean beauty has earned global attention. Therefore, while keeping our eye on K-beauty trends we found the top trends that are going to be around for 2021.
First, last year was an all-time high for clean and sustainable beauty. This trend mirrored the rise in climate change worldwide as well as the rise of air pollution in South Korea. The Korean consumer’s made it clear that they wanted clean skincare choices in 2020. Clean products have fewer chemicals. Also, these companies are switching to more eco-friendly packaging.
Secondly, the next 2020 trend is skincare with high content and high performance. To clarify, less focus on quantity and more focus on quality. This means consumers want a shorter ingredient list, and many brands are doing just that! They are highlighting their star ingredients down to the percentage!
Thirdly, 2020 has also seen an increase in personalized skincare products. Gaining popularity in 2019, personalized products are continuing to expand in 2020. The main reason being advances in data science and technology. To clarify, advanced tech allows companies to analyze consumers’ skin conditions and lifestyle habits in order to create skincare tailored to their individual needs.
While breaking down the trends for 2020 we noticed a brand that is going above and beyond! If you’re looking for sustainable, personalized skincare with a great ingredient list check out TOUN 28!
Who is TOUN 28?
TOUN 28 is a Korean skincare company that believes in an ever-changing skincare routine. They believe that every 28 days we should adjust our skincare routine. This time period suits seasonal changes in external factors. Also, 28 days matches the natural renewal cycle on your skin barrier.
“Like balanced diets make a healthy body, Balanced ingredients make healthy skin”
They focus on high content ingredients allocating 90% of their production costs to ingredients alone. The other 10% covers their self-developed 100% biodegradable paper packaging.
TOUN 28’s mission is built on never-changing values. To clarify, TOUN 28 “seeks healthy beauty to benefit people and the environment.”
How does TOUN 28 achieve its mission?
In order to achieve skincare products that emphasize helping consumers and the environment TOUN 28 focuses on three main aspects:
DATA CHANGE YOUR SKIN
TOUN 28 is not only trying to better the environment, but they are attempting to overturn the entire cosmetics market. They are combating the idea that long term use of the same product is harmful to the skin. “The skin changes every month. Is it right to buy the same cosmetics?” Therefore, skincare should be manufactured based on data and diagnosis, not preference or marketing.
LESS PLASTIC
Unlike some companies who think about the environment TOUN 28 acts for the environment. When you enter their official website it shows the number of animals saved and plastic not-used to produce their products. Why? Because “two billion animals are killed every year due to swallowing dumped plastic” garbage. This “plastic garbage” includes cosmetics products. This, TOUN 28 developed its own biodegradable paper container to reduce plastic (They are still working on a 100%-biodegradable paper container with no plastic cap.).
INGREDIENTS FIRST
Until they were able to produce their own container, TOUN 28 describes how most of their money went towards the container, not the ingredients. TOUN 28’s ‘Put Ons’ pay 90% of costs for the raw elements, and only 10% for containers. Ensuring that they have a star ingredient list!
What are TOUN 28’S Popular Products?
TOUN 28 makes all its products in Korea. TOUN 28’s products are classified as “Put On” (facial and body care) and “Wash Off” (soaps).
Its most famous products are:
Organic Hand H1
Organic HEV UV Protector B2
Trouble Care For Dehydrated Oily Skin
Trouble Care For Sensitive Skin
pH Balancing Toner
How can you try TOUN 28?
They only sell directly to Korea at the moment. However, YesStyle is an approved retailer of TOUN 28! Therefore, you can check out YesStyle for all your TOUN 28 product needs!
